FED: New research fund for asthma launched

Federal Health Minister TONY ABBOTT will launch Australia's first exclusive asthma
research fund today.

Asthma Foundation of Australia chairman PETER ADAMSON says the Macquarie Bank National
Asthma Research fund will help encourage and develop asthma researchers.

Set up with initial funding of $250,000 from both the Asthma and Macquarie Bank Foundations,
the fund will support young scientists and also aims to be consumer driven, with asthma
sufferers to identify research priorities.

Mr ADAMSON says there's still alot that's unknown about asthma, a condition that affects
around 2.2 million Australians and costs the economy up to $1 billion a year.
