Member of prominent Boston family charged in subway beating

BOSTON - A scion of a prominent local family was charged withbeating two black girls at a downtown subway station in whatauthorities say was a racially motivated attack.

Josiah A. Spaulding III, 23, had been a fugitive until his arrestFriday in the November incident. He pleaded innocent to charges ofassault and civil rights violations, and was ordered held on $500,000bail.

Spaulding was allegedly among a group of nine people whoconfronted three black teenagers inside the Park Street station Nov22. The group allegedly shouted racial slurs.

Spaulding attacked two of the girls, both 17, with a club-likemetal weapon known as an asp, prosecutor Daniel Conley said. …
